Be Helpful: Go-Grow-Glow
Luke 9:46, 49, 53-56, 57-62
” 46 Then there arose a reasoning among them, which of them should be greatest.”
“49 And John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name; and we forbad him, because he followeth not with us.”
“53 And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem.
54 And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did?
55 But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.
56 For the Son of man is not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.”
“57 And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest.
58 And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.
59 And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.
60 Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God.
61 And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house.
62 And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”
(Luke 9:46, 49, 53-56, 57-62)
I. Last week we talked about being real.
A. We talked about our mission not being a secret mission like the CIA, but a public mission.
B. We talked about the fear of telling people about our faith.
C. We talked about the fear of not being perfect enough or having enough knowledge to talk to people about God.
II. Think of a time you tried to unsuccessfully communicate without words.
A. Maybe you tried to communicate love through a hug, a smile or an act of kindness.
B. Maybe you tried to communicate hurt through body language, or silence but your message was misunderstood or missed completely.
C. Maybe you tried to show someone how you felt, but because you didn’t tell them what you were thinking, the message wasn’t received.
D. Think about a time when you or someone you know made a promise that was broken or a statement that wasn’t backed up with actions.
E. Remember how you felt when someone told you one thing, but their actions showed you something different.
III. Show and Tell
A. We can’t just tell people what we believe. We have to show them with our actions.
B. Think about our mission one more time, Matthew 28:18-20. Jesus said for us to share the good news of His life, death, and resurrection! Make disciples! Multiply yourselves!
“18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.” (Matthew 28:18-20)
C. In Luke 10:1-9, Jesus sent out the 70, look what He said to His disciples:
“1 After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come.
2 Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.
3 Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves.
4 Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way.
5 And into whatsoever house ye enter, first say, Peace be to this house.
6 And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it: if not, it shall turn to you again.
7 And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give: for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Go not from house to house.
8 And into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you:
9 And heal the sick that are therein, and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.” (Luke 10:1-9)
1. Stay in people’s homes. Share meals with them and accept their hospitality.
2. Build long-term relationships rather than moving around constantly.
3. Heal the sick members of the communities.
4. Jesus is teaching us that before we tell, we have to show. We must first build relationships and learn to serve others so that we have the right to share the good news with our words.
IV. How did the early disciples show the gospel?
A. They brought value to others. People found the message of Jesus was the hope and help they needed so they responded.
B. They prayed for people and helped people in need.
C. They spent time and built relationships that brought value to others and earned trust and influence that gave them the right to speak.
V. CPR: Care – Pray – Respond
Maybe you’re not called to preach or you don’t know really what you’re called to do? But!!! Do you know someone who is struggling, carrying burdens, hurting?
Respond with CPR. Call them, pray for them, and help them.
Together as the MPC family CPRs to the needs of people with love in actions and words we will see many people helped and our mission fulfilled. The Lord says, “Thanks so much!!!”
